Im a Welsh girl who has recently come back from a wonderful visit to Jordan and Palestine. I am hopeing to move to Jordan and study Arabic as soon as i finish my degree in June as i was so taken by the country, the culture, the people.....everything in fact! it is now definately my dream to emegrate at the very first chance i get!!.

I was so impressed with the warm reception i received and how much genuine help i got from people, as a young woman traveling on her own it was invaluable! and something that just would not have happened if i were walking around London or Cardiff.

Judging by what i saw and what i have read the king is doing a great job with the country and seems to welcome feedback from his people, he seems genuine and approachable. I hope the king continues in the same fain with his enchanting country.

Maybe am so late to post a comment in this page but i do realy feel proud more and more day by day of our king and our nation.

I would like very much to thank our beloved king even in this article as an example or for what he made as a habit to share and communicate with his people.

That what should kings be...

Maybe abu hussein will come back again to read these lines one day so if his majesty do am gonna tell him in arabic the following:

Dear Jennifer,

It is true, a boycott of a fast food or coffee shop is simpler than one of the computing industry since there are many local alternatives that match and exceed it in quality. My personal buying choices are based on a balance of quality and price as opposed to social responsibility. I see the local chapters of international franchises as local businesses as well with local employees, and local customers even when they are owned by foreign investors. So while we agree on encouraging local businesses, I see boycotts as openly hostile and a direct obstacle to peaceful coexistence.

I liked the quote from the Holy Quraan in the final answer:
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
ياايها الذين امنوا ان جائكم فاسق بنبأ فتبينوا ان تصيبوا قوما بجهالة فتصبحوا على مافعلتم نادمين

It's true that a big chunk of public opinion is based on hearsay and on media reports that lack the investigative dimension and professional core.

The problem lies in this two-faced journalism that Jordan fosters. When the King is NOT LOOKING, you have subjective/badly-researched reporting left right and center, with little effort to raise the professional standards of journalism, let alone raise the ceiling of expression. Of course, even freedom of expression needs 'method' – method of thinking, presenting argument and defending it. Journalism in Jordan is not reaching its potential because it is stuck in its own weakness, producing cut-and-paste kind of reports. The good reporters are simply headhunted by CNN and the BBC (or work at The Jordan Times & a few other magazines in english with an extremely narrow reasership consisting mostly of embassies and diplomats) leaving us with Press-Release kind of folk . Where is Jordan going, what are its plans for its media quarters - especially its official media? Actually we can set precedent by being the first government to send so-called 'opposition' media on training workshops with Rueters & The Financial Times, because those are the tabloids that adhere to no standards whatsoever & spread all kinds of rumors... some of which have some essence, but being poorly handled they instantly loose their journalistic value.

When the King is LOOKING, suddenly linguistically everything changes, going from one extreme (writing that liberally assassinates character, misrepresents information and creates havoc), to another extreme that departs from internationally respected journalism, into culturally accepted (however extremely discouraging to the image & vision of Jordan) where vows are made in emotional reporting that can be regarded as a joke if examined against Rueters/BBC/CNN?The NewYork Times/The Financial Times/The Economist/The Guardian/Time Magazine standrads - no one professional journalist entity in this wide universe polishes apple the way our media does (another sign of its professional weakness). Addustour has created its own secret ingredient to stay on the map (feeling insecure and targetted since it is not quite the government mouthpiece Al Rai is). It likes to use news items that stir up a lot of emotions and are granted to recieve heated responses from people in love with their country and thirsty for a sense of security in order to be left alone. This usually happens after it publishes some opinion article by one or few of its opinion writers who aren't always a mouthpeice for the government (regarded as opposition/Islamist movers & shakers who sometimes sound opinions that do not appeal to authorities). It's a good survival mechanism that I think does more harm than good and reaffirms a Machiavellian approach to journalism... جبر وكسر

In general, a self respecting media sets its standards for dealing with citizen, government and King... homeland, internal affairs, high-level, middle-level and grass root levels alike. Good media writes in a balanced, professional manner every time, uses consistent language & strict parameters that express its depth and credibility every time, every instance, in every interview, with every news item… Good journalism does not fluctuate between badly written reports to sudden emotional bouts of apple polishing its way to please the country's Leader.

Reading the interview with his Majesty I am truly impressed by the level of debate that we have reached in Jordan. Currently living abroad for the short term, I always try to keep the image of Jordan the best I would like it to be. I like to believe that Jordan is like no other country in the world. In addition, I owe Jordan a lot and cannot wait for the time to give back at least part of what I owe. I was brought up to love Jordan and put all my energy into making it the best country that it could be. No one can deny that given the resources that we have had we, as a Jordanian family, came a long way to reach the point we are at.

Visiting every now and then and talking to people all around from Jordan I have to admit there has been a sense of frustration. Still, that is normal I believe due to the fast paced change currently Jordan is undergoing. Any type of change needs time for the people to adapt to in particular the change we are going through in Jordan. Of course the number one addressed issue as our majesty mentioned is prices. However, trying not to sound egoistic I also do think that the higher prices issue came to be somewhat advantageous. The reason I say that is I have realized that mind set of a lot of the young generation is changing. One of the examples is that currently working the somewhat "ordinary", but definitely decent, jobs while going to school is no longer a shame. That probably indicates how much the younger generation is adapting and moreover accepting the change. On the other hand, I can also see how the change is harder to accept for some of the older, but young in their hearts, generation. The change is coming harder in terms of them seeing the country moving towards the unknown. Time -as mentioned earlier- until positive outcome is achieved is probably the only remedy for such thoughts.

Honestly not exaggerating Jordan is possibly the most educated nation I have ever interacted with. A person can engage in an intellectual conversation in almost every social setting. In addition, you would always know at least one person that has a solution to most of Jordan's problems and cynical of Jordan's achievements and changes too. It is definitely ok to be critical in a positive way, however, the annoying part is that although some are critical there is no contribution to make Jordan a better place. Unfortunately, the contributions would come in the form of a rumor instead. Yet, currently what is making me happy is that positive contributions reflecting actual actions can be actually sensed now and that is definitely a positive change. Nevertheless, I do not want to sound cynical myself as positive contributions have always existed but, the point is they are certainly increasing.

"The human contribution is the essential ingredient." Ethel Percy Andrus

I think our country is on the right track with our Majesty's vision and transparency of any kind is always appreciated and advantageous to everybody. I have seen the impact this interview has had and I am truly happy of the way people have reacted to it. This type of debate actually in my viewpoint at least encourages people to take a step further in their contribution to Jordan without hesitation. Hopefully on the other end this type of debate would cut out any more potential rumors and more words can be seen put into action instead.

I would like to conclude with the image I always love to present about Jordan. It is an image we always presented to the world and is truly how we are. It comes to the surprise of every foreigner after they see or hear about Jordan is when they ask "What is Jordan's main resource?" or "What is it that Jordan relies on?" the answer with ultimate pride would always be "The People".

One of the examples is that currently working the somewhat “ordinary”, but definitely decent, jobs while going to school is no longer a shame.

In addition, you would always know at least one person that has a solution to most of Jordan’s problems and cynical of Jordan’s achievements and changes too.

“The human contribution is the essential ingredient.” Ethel Percy Andrus

I think our country is on the right track with our Majesty’s vision and transparency of any kind is always appreciated and advantageous to everybody.

It comes to the surprise of every foreigner after they see or hear about Jordan is when they ask “What is Jordan’s main resource?” or “What is it that Jordan relies on?” the answer with ultimate pride would always be “The People”.

Brother your site is very very attractive, keep up the good work, dont worry about waking up and someone taking you to court.

If you dont attack someone personally or invade their privacy and remain below the red line when it comes to his Majesty King Abdullah II then you should be fine

best of luck

Great interview

Unfortunately to say a majority Jordanians believe everything they read and probably dont read between the lines. I am not talking about the interview I am talking about Jordanian daily newspapers and what they publish.

There was an article published a while back talking about how rumours in Jordan will cause problems and it happened and will continue to happen.

Yes i am fully with Jordan moving forward however peoples way of thinking must also move forward and evolve, this is the issue this is the biggest issue.

First of all I want to offer my deep and honest respect to our beloved king Abdullah 2nd...may Gad almighty protect him.

Secondly, I have a very short and simple comment on this issue of boycotting that was implemented from long time, i think from the 40's or so of the last century, I would like to ask one question just let us state one positive thing we gain as Arabs from boycotting policy?

My humble opinion is that, we in fact the side whom they lost a lot, and our enemies gain every thing, they gain technology and advance industries which every one know to which level they reach, they gain the sympathy of the world specially all the big companies which was boycotted by the Arabs…we lost making good friend with those big companies because we refuse them, so the other side utilized and give and convince the west world that we are the bad and he is the good, and this is why we are suffering always in convincing, explain and communicate with the rest of the world about our cases, because simply we did not allow them to know us…if you set with my enemy then you are my enemy…this is absolutely wrong concept.

It is time to change, and leave behind all those wrong and old theories of the 60's and 70's – which proven to be wrong and which bring all the disasters on our Arab nation…let the other people know us as they know our enemies lets deal with them in our way, and when they know us closely I assure you all their thinking will change because we are good in nature and we are the right but our problem we did not give them a chance to be close and know us better.

Nas, It is so refreshing to see that your blog reaches the highest levels. I had a sense that was so (in fact I heard a rumor, but wouldn't want to spread that any further). I always recommend your blog to those who interested in Jordan and, of course, read it myself. You keep me in touch with this adopted homeland of mine. Oh, and I always thought His Majesty must be an awfully forthright person. Nice to see I'm right. I hope he read your post about the unfortunate visit you had with those who remain nameless and called those who were responsible to account. Thanks for your continuing take on the news.

I've never been more struck with the sheer power that the relationship between a leader and his people can hold. My snooty political science professors always manage to depress us as they speak of the rift between state and citizen, but today -our dear King can attest to being the exception to that rule.

The head may lie uneasy, but with a heart of gold it will endure. I tip my hat to you Your Majesty!

I have tremendous respect for our King, but many people are not convinced by his approach to certain issues and do not believe what the government has to say sometimes. Why?
I think it's because of the contradicting news that we get occasionally from different newspapers and articles; leaving the citizen confused and uncertain about what's going on. Therefore, I believe that more transparency in the government's actions would shut these people up, giving the citizen an insight on the government's plan for the future and hence the feeling of security and reassurance. Which without a doubt is the goal of his Majesty; safety and happiness for his people.

I am so glad that his Majesty reads such blogs, and I never adored him as much as I do now!
